It's Just a Coffee: The Rise of the Tip Screen

5 July 2026

I walked into a bakery. I picked up a muffin from a display case. I walked to the counter and handed it to the person. They scanned it, tapped the iPad, and spun it around. 'It's just going to ask you a quick question.'

The question is: 15%, 20%, or 25% tip? For what?! I did all the labour! I picked the muffin! You just moved it six inches across a counter. Why am I tipping a quarter of the price of the muffin for a transaction that took four seconds?

And of course, 'No Tip' is hidden away like a shameful secret in tiny font at the bottom. You have to actively reject them while they stand there watching you. It's emotional blackmail disguised as convenience.
